How To Protect Your Skin From the Haze

We all know the damage that too much exposure to UV rays from the sun has on our skin, causing faster skin aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer. It doesn’t take a professional or expert from skincare clinics (klinik skin care) to tell you. While it’s extremely important to apply sunscreen every day, SPF protection won’t protect your skin from the second most damaging thing in the air – pollution.

Cities like Singapore, Philippines, Tokyo, and New York are filled with ambient particulate matter (PM) including dust, dirt, and smoke, not to mention the haze. Living in these places exposes our skin to all these harmful airborne pollutants and toxins elements that unleash free radical activity in our skin. This wreak havocs on the skin’s protective lipids and can accelerate the aging process.

According to Tony Vargas, Elizabeth Arden’s Vice President of Global Research & Development, this weakening of our skin’s natural antioxidant defense system causes “a chain reaction of skin damage, resulting in lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and dark spots, loss of firmness and elasticity and aging signs”.

Furthermore, our body naturally produces DNA repair enzymes to mend the skin. With time, the level of these repair enzymes decreases, making it harder for our cells to fix skin damage caused by the onslaught of environmental aggressors.

And just like with sun damage, the harm created by pollution accumulates slowly over time and usually takes years to reveal itself on the skin.

Protect and strengthen your skin from environmental assaults with these five smart tips:

Cleansing regularly

Wash the face thoroughly every day to remove any buildup of dirt and grime, which can cause pimples. It is advisable to use a good exfoliating product at least twice a week to unclog polluted pores and reenergize your skin.

Eat antioxidant-rich foods

This is to help fend off any free radical damage, clear and promotes healthy skin.

Stay indoors often

Minimize spending more time outdoors, especially when it is haze season. For normal days, avoid going out on peak hours – this is where you get the exhaust from the cars.

Always stay hydrated

Drink water daily to replenish the lost moisture due to the environment and help flush out toxins from your body and keeping healthy skin.

Layer up

Apply skincare products on a daily basis to help protect the skin from both the sun and air pollution.

Don’t take things for granted. The more your skin is exposed to these pollutants, the faster the aging process takes place. Even skincare clinics (klinik skin care) would recommend taking these precautions to care for your skin.
